Riverside Transmission Reliability Project — overhead lines through Norco
Southern California Edison’s Riverside Transmission Reliability Project is adding miles of high-voltage overhead transmission lines across the Santa Ana River and through Norco to give Riverside a second grid connection. The project was approved by the CPUC in 2020 and Riverside voted to move forward in 2024, with construction underway in 2025–26 — but Norco residents and city leaders have pushed to have the lines undergrounded, citing wildfire risk in a known fire corridor.
“We just want equity. Our neighbors to the north in Jurupa, those lines are undergrounded on the other side of the river. It’s about making sure communities are treated fairly.”
Why it matters: Overhead transmission lines through a high-fire-risk corridor are exactly the kind of grid-dependency risk that makes on-site solar and battery storage worth modeling for Norco properties seeking outage resilience.
